
2021 Responding to the COVID Pandemic On December 14, 2020, a New York nurse received the first COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S., a hopeful milestone. But as vaccine distribution expanded, racial disparities quickly became clear: white Americans were getting vaccinated at higher rates, while communities of color faced greater illness and death. We saw the same gap in Pinellas County.
Then known as Indivisible Safety Harbor/North Pinellas, we partnered with local organizations and pushed for change. We attended County Commission meetings and urged the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas to act. Thanks to persistent advocacy from our coalition, the County ultimately strengthened its COVID-19 response in underserved communities, bringing vital resources where they were needed most.
